Cryptozoology is official known as a ‘pseudoscience and subculture that aims to prove the existence of entities from the folklore record’. It looks at creatures such as Bigfoot, the chupacabra, or the Loch Ness monster and attempts to locate, document, and study them. Cryptozoologists refer to these entities as cryptids – obscure, undocumented creatures typically originating from folklore that are usually mythological in nature, but not necessarily supernatural. Join Mike and Frank on this episode of Troubled Minds radio as we discuss and look at evidence for some of these cyrptid creatures.

If cryptids are really out there, why don’t we have evidence of their existence? Why don’t we have photographs, videos, sound recordings, and biological proof? Well, we do. We have all these things. The evidence is all over the internet. Videos of bigfoot, pictures of bizarre creatures washed ashore from the depths of the sea, sighting reports of strange things that go bump in the night. Yet, cryptids stay cryptids. Despite the evidence, no one believes. A small few persist and continue to hunt for these creatures, but the vast majority, stuck in their thinking, refuse the possibility that their understanding of the world is not perfect. Their lack of belief, the absolute refusal to ponder the existence of things unexplained, may stem from a desire to feel safe, to feel all knowing. That feeling quickly goes away when walking in the woods at night.

What about modern sightings of creatures thought to be extinct? Are these creatures ‘cryptids’ or are they just a failure of science and representative of a lack of data? Pterosaurs, pterodactyls in particular, come to mind. Plenty of people have seen, photographed, and made video recordings of these creatures in recent years. Some have even claimed to have killed them. Real dinosaurs, in the modern age. And why not, they have wings, they can fly, hiding, surviving, and thriving in remote and untraveled regions. On this episode, we take a look at pterosaur evidence and discuss the idea that these creatures are still around.
